After discovering you are unexpectedly pregnant, telling others is immediately on your mind. How will your partner or your family respond? It may help to talk with someone who won’t judge or lecture you first. Come to AscentCare Pregnancy Services.

Can My Pregnancy Test Result Be Wrong?

Although rare, false-negative results are possible. To assure the most accurate results, follow these directions:

  • Wait until after you have missed a period
  • Check the expiration date on your pregnancy test.
  • Use undiluted urine, which would be first thing in the morning for most people.
  • Make sure to wait the recommended amount of time before checking the test.

According to the Mayo Clinic, there’s up to a 20% chance of miscarriage. The percentage could be higher because many women miscarry before realizing they’re pregnant. You can get a positive pregnancy test result even if you’ve miscarried because it takes time for your body to return to normal.

Can I Verify My Pregnancy?

If you’ve taken an at-home pregnancy test and it was positive, your next step is to verify the test. Over-the-counter pregnancy tests have different levels of sensitivity. Getting a second opinion is always your best bet.

At AscentCare, we provide lab-quality pregnancy testing at no cost. We will schedule you for a no-cost ultrasound if your pregnancy test is positive.

A pregnancy test only indicates pregnancy is possible, but an ultrasound will confirm if your pregnancy is viable (growing) or if you have had a miscarriage. An ultrasound will also reveal how far along you are in your pregnancy.

How Do I Tell My Partner?

Once you have verified your pregnancy, give yourself time to process the information. An unexpected pregnancy is overwhelming on its own without dealing with the emotions of others.

If you are in an unhealthy relationship with your partner, ensure you are safe before you talk. Take a trusted friend or family member with you, or meet in a public location. You should never experience threats or violence from anyone. Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for free and confidential information 24/7.

Even if your relationship with your partner is healthy, the news of an unexpected pregnancy is shocking. Tell your partner you have verified it, and let them know how many weeks you have been pregnant.
